Lanak & Hanna Team Does Part to Help End Hunger in Orange County

In an effort to be of service to our community, Lanak &Hanna attorneys and staff volunteered on a recent Saturday morning, at the Second Harvest Food Bank of Orange County - Food Distribution Center in Irvine,CA.

Founded in 1983, Second Harvest is the largest nonprofit hunger relief organization in Orange County, and is leading the fight to end hunger in our community. It's a member of Feeding America, a nationwide hunger-relief network of comprised of 200 food banks.

The mission of Second Harvest is simple: To end hunger in Orange County.

While Orange County remains one of the most affluent counties in America, it is also a place where at least 301,000 members of the community are challenged by food insecurity every month. This number includes one in six children who are at risk of hunger each month.

Lanak & Hanna has learned that most of the hungry are the working poor who are trying their best to provide food for their families, or seniors on fixed incomes who simply cannot make ends meet. Faced with the reality of sky-high rents, rising medical costs, and lingering under-employment, too many of our neighbors are forced to make hard choices between food and paying the rent, or buying the medicine they need.

Of the children who are impacted, nearly half of all those who presently attend public school rely on reduced or free school lunches for their major source of nutrition. That’s 112,000 kids who may well be going to bed hungry on weekends and during summer vacation when school is out.

With the help of grocery chains, farmers, financial donors and volunteers, Second Harvest Food Bank works through a network of more than 300 non-profit partner agencies and programs to effectively provide wholesome food and fresh produce to more than 250,000 hungry children, seniors and families in Orange County every month, with a goal to serve 301,000 "food insecure" county residents.

For its part, the Lanak & Hanna team, during it's three hour volunteer shift, was instrumental in sorting and packing more than two tons of fresh produce.

Mac Cabal, Senior Counsel says, "I learned through volunteering that over 300,000 OC residents go hungry every year. The Second Harvest food bank strives to combat hunger in OC. I encourage others to volunteer as well. The organization is well run, represents a noble cause, and unlike other volunteering events, you can actually see the “fruits of your labor.” In our case, bags of oranges and cucumbers went to hungry families last week. Very rewarding to see a direct impact with such a worthy cause.”
